About ShaWanna Renee Rivon,

founder of August Wilson in the Park

Shawanna Renee Rivon is a playwright, artist-activist, and influential figure in the arts community, particularly in Houston, Texas. Her work is characterized by a unique blend of art and history, reflecting her deep appreciation for Black culture and storytelling. Rivon's plays often tackle pressing social issues such as racism, sexism, and gender inequality, while also celebrating the resilience and spirit of Black women.

Rivon's artistic range is diverse, encompassing genres such as realism, romance, comedy, farce, and sketches. She draws inspiration from iconic figures, infusing her work with their revolutionary spirit and creativity. As a Black Woman Playwright, Rivon writes from a place of accountability and representation, striving to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and challenge existing narratives.

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Rivon is actively engaged in community initiatives, including projects like Virtual Third Ward Historical Tour and Black Power Arts Celebration, which aim to promote social justice, preservation and empowerment. Her leadership and commitment to effecting positive change have earned her recognition, including being voted number #25 on The 2023 list of Houston’s Top Movers and Shakers.

The Black Woman Project

Esurient Arts

The Black Woman Project is a nonprofit organization, rooted in creating safe and healing spaces for Black women. The project offers free group therapy sessions, morning meditations, and opportunities for fellowship.

Esurient Arts started in 2016. They are dedicated to fostering access, equity, and belonging as Houston's premier multidisciplinary arts company, seamlessly integrating the arts with social determinants of health. They specialize in productions that highlight the narratives of historically excluded or underrepresented communities.


In addition to performances, they offer consultancy services for organizations nationwide, spearhead community-focused initiatives & outreach events, and provide professional development opportunities for both youth & adult artists. They also offer evidence-based programming that eliminates barriers to access to the arts for underserved communities, as well as healing-centered training that promotes equity & wellness.
